Have you ever used a spiraling tool to add some flair to your work?  These two I picked up from a woodturning workshop at the  John C Campbell Folk School .  There are commercial brands available.   Amazon, for example, has several  by just  doing a search for Woodturning Spiraling Tools.

Now to be honest, the cuts you see here are very simple but these tools are capable of much, much more than this!  Just take a look at YouTube for some examples:
